My wife has had her 206 1.4LX from new (T Reg 1999) been as good as gold. About 8 weeks ago it suddenly cut out. Since then I have been driving it more to try and simulate the problem. Sometimes it never happens during a journey and sometimes it ca cut out 3 or 4 times on a short 5 minute trip.
At first it seem to only cut out as you took you foot off the accelerator. i.e. you would be going along at 40 and lift you foot of slightly to cruise and then you noticed that you were slowing down and in fact the engine was dead. No lights on the dash. Depress the clutch (whist going along) to let the revs drop. When the revs get to zero the dashboard lights up (as if you have just turned the ignition on) at this point you drop the clutch and hey presto you are off again until the next time.
At first it only happened when you took your foot off the accelerator but it has also happened whist accelerating (rules out idle stepper motor).
It has never cut out during tickover.
I have read through this forum (very useful) and have changed the MAP sensor. The car has been into Peugeot who said the only thing to show up on the diagnostics is the MAP sensor showing open or short circuit (that would have been me unplugging it whist the engine was running).
I cant predict when its going to do it and it can go days without cutting out so Peugeot have no chance of finding it.
Now this thread has been going a while and I have read somewhere that Peugeot know of the problem but don’t know what causes it.
I am and electronics engineer so I have rigged up a voltage sensor to the coil supply my first thoughts are to see if when the engine cuts out is it Fuel or Electrics. The device I have made monitors voltage and if the voltage disappears for any length of time a sounder goes off in the car.
I only made and fitted this last night and of course since fitting it the cars has been fine.
I am amazed that nobody has come up with an answer yet my guess is that a number of problems can cause a similar fault i.e. the idle stepper motor would cause the engine to cut out when your foot is completely off the accelerator.
I anybody can advise or my thought process or can point me to a cure then any feedback would be welcome. My wife has lost faith in her once precious car and I consider it as dangerous as it once cut out whilst pulling across a road junction.
Do Peugeot know about this???

I had the engine cut out problem for a few weeks. I would be driving and randomly the electrics would cut out and the counters would all drop to zero but there was no stalling. It would happen every 30 seconds or so, constantly.
I took it to peugeot who said the earth lead needed changing cuz it wasn't making a good connection.
I though this was b*ll sh*t to be honest but it worked! Since then (touch wood) it hasn't happened. This was about four months ago by the way.

Many thanks to Diag2000 for the help he gave me with my 206 Engine cutting out problem also Teddy from another forum for sending me some copy which backed up what diag2000 was telling me and gave me the explanation I was looking for.
For those of you who have, or are suffering from this problem then here was my solution.
My problem started about 12 weeks ago and initially would show up once or twice a week but has got progressively worst until last week when it would do it on virtually every journey.
The problem was, that mainly (but not always) during deceleration at any speed my engine would just die. No warning lights on the dash and the rev counter showing the correct engine speed. Depressing the clutch and letting the revs drop to zero brought the dash board lights on. Then by just dropping the clutch the engine would burst into life until the next time it died.
Also on a couple of occasion the engine revving up all by itself (This was not due to the idle stepper motor as I had it disconnected)
I had checked all the normal things, idle stepper motor, changed the MAP sensor, checked the engine speed sensor and was running out of ideas.
I placed an item on the forum asking help in identifying a control box. Diag2000 told me correctly what is was and the dialog continued from there.
Diag2000 suggested that I checked a few things as follows: -
Earth connection to the gearbox. Earth connection on the near side chassis leg. MAP sensor not contaminated. Engine speed sensor (see below). Throttle position potentiometer.
Diag2000 than asked for a picture of my ignition coil pack (aren’t digital cameras great)
He said I had the old type, these were liable to cause problems, he suggested I fit the new type (see below) along with Bosch plugs and new plug extensions.
I did that last Friday and have used the car a lot over this weekend and so far it’s been as good as gold so I feel confident that my problems are over.
I have to say I was not convinced as I thought (wrongly) if the coil pack was breaking down then the car would be misfiring, also why did it only happen when decelerating.
Well apparently when the coil pack goes wrong or the spark is not going to the plugs it can send spikes back to the ECU via the main wiring or the injector wiring. This can cause the ECU do a number of nasty things including shutting down (a bit like your computer hanging)
Why does it show up when you decelerate, apparently the resistance of spark plug gap increases during deceleration. Meaning, if the spark can’t jump the gap it has to go somewhere else.
So if you have the problem I described please check your coil pack. The old type has a black connector and square shoulders. The new modified type that Peugeot released has a grey connector and or round shoulders. (mine had a black connector and round shoulders) £84.00 from Peugeot.
If yours is cutting out with the K light coming on and the rev counter dying then check the engine speed sensor, these suffer from heat and can go open circuit when hot (causing the engine to stop) and be ok when the engine cools down.
If yours is cutting out at traffic light or won’t idle check the idle stepper motor.
Once again thank you Diag2000, EdinburghAndy, Teddy and all that contributed I would have never had got there without the help of the forum.
There was an interesting article in the February edition of Car Mechanics regarding 206 electronic problems worth looking out for.
I had rung 3 Peugeot dealers who had never heard of this problem, It had been into a dealer to have the ECU connected to the diagnostics machine (no fault found).
Diag2000 suggests that this is a common problem, Car Mechanics mag suggests this is a common problem so why don’t all the dealers know about it. Even Peugeot released a modified coil pack?
I hope that’s me sorted and I have learnt a lot about my pugs electronics.
If I can supply anymore information the please contact me.
Regards to you all Dave

2003 1.1i NL53*** Cannot belive that this happend to me this morning!!!! I have been a member on this forum for a while now and have been driving a 206 for over a year, so was more than aware of the problem, but had never ever seen any sign of it. And so i come into Newcastle city centre straight off the A1, its the 1st time if slowed the car down and stopped (red light) for a good while, 220 miles maybee, and im sitting at the lights, first in the q, with the cluth depressed and the car in gear and it just went, it suddenly just went, it came back on on its own accord but after that was going crazy at idle for a while!! Strange and thank god it didnt happen in a dangerous situation. EDIT!! I have just driven a 3 mile drive from my house into the town centre and its cut out on me TEXT that is just not on! We have only had this car since Jan and im off to the dealership tomorrow!!

Hi there I have an 206 GLX, reg no X936. 1.6 2000. Like everyone else I have been having this problem for some time now. though for me it seems to be whenever I am in a queue/stopped at traffic lights or when slowing down to turn a corner (Sods Law). The cars engine stops, the Ignigtion Lights comes on (orange one). When i try and restart the car, it tries to fire up, but fails. I have found that by leaving the car anywhere between 20-60 minutes then the car decides to restart. Like everyone, I have had repeatily near misses and one near fatal accident. not to mention the amount of annoyed cars/buses and so forth beeping at me in the rush hour traffic. have taken it to peg garage in bristol and also in basingstoke about 4 times now. They again have no idea what the problem is, but have attempted a few things. 1. Replace. Ignition Coil pack coil pack extension kit Spark plugs This seemed to solve problem for about a month. So went to one in bristol and they did. 2.Replaced Dula relay. Now this was about a 2 weeks ago. I havent had enough fuel to test the car (Uni student too much debt)! But no doudbt, I will be in traffic at some point and it may appear again? Does anyone have any other advice? I am not very familiar with cars to be honest so please bear with me, any help would be very much appreciated and willing to buy a pint for anyone near bristol who can solve this darn problem frog61@hotmail.com

had the guy from RAC check that as well as guys at Peg garage, it seems to be fine. Car still stalls when I have parked by side for 2 hours with bonnet open, will restart, drive on for about 5 mins then die again. most odd

206 1.6 XSi X945 2000
Had this problem for nearly a year now. Totally random, when coming to a stop or driving slowly, revs just drop off, then engine dies. Loss of power stearing. Wont restart afterwards, just keeps turning over. then after a random period of time 20min - 2hrs will start with either very high revs at idle, or will not idle at all, but just drop straight through and stall, but will restart straight away. has caused me to brakedown on motorway/carparks/pulling out of junctions. also happened once at about 40mph! Only started when car was out of warranty and refuse to pay pug £60per hour + to tell me they cant find a fault. just had engine management read (unknown fault codes) and throttle/stepper motor cleaned. (to no avail)

I didn't really worry about it that much as it's only done it twice since i've had my car. But it only went and cut out last night......... However, when analysing the times and places of cutouts, at all times i was coasting (yes, i know bad habit - so shoot me ) and it seemed to drop revs and all the lights come on but because i was coasting slowly i couldn't bump start it again each time. That seems to be the only common factor - I've tried really hard not to coast and i think that's why it's only cut out a few times.

Wow, I'm really glad I found this site. I thought I was imagining that fault, and the guy at the dealership started ignoring my calls.
Fortunately mine has been fixed, I am very persuasive.
After at least five times of going back and forth to the dealer I demanded that they keep the car (and give me a hire car for free) until it was fixed and they could guarantee I wouldn't die driving it down the motorway.
My baby used to just die randomly, no specific speed, no specific time after I'd first started it in a morning. The steering used to also die, as did the brakes, a rather dangerous situation.
Now unfortunately as I am not a mechanic nor am I under any illusion that I do know about cars, I for the life of me haven't the foggiest idea what they did, but just what they described to me. I hope you car geniuses will know what part I am going to tell you about! - they replaced some filters (fuel??) and replaced something the guy described as the newer car version of a catalytic converter (had a really funny name!).
The guy had insisted that there couldn't possibly be anything wrong with the car because his computer (and the car's) said so. Since when are computers more intelligent than people? (rhetorical question)
I said I knew better than any computer, and thats how the story ends.TEXT

i just posted this somehwere else but ive got a V reg 1.4i 206 and ive had it since march but it cut out on sunday so i called the AA they told me it was the coil pack and all they could do was to tow me home coz you can only get the part from peugeot, it cost £105 so i was a bit p!ssed off but it looks like this is a major common fault, shouldnt they be replacing them free of charge if there is a fault with them?

Mine is a 1.4i LX V304*** not sure where it was from, i got it second hand, had it since march and it happened on sunday, i went round a corner and it just started spluttering and no power so i pulled up and called the AA, they told me it was the coil pack after testing it and it was missfiring, it only happened once as i replaced the coil pack straight away (costing £105 ) and has been ok since but its still early days i suppose. I also wanted to say that i got the recall letter about the brakes and when i was sat waiting for it done i heard all the guys in the office talking about cars being recalled for new engines and loads of stuff, there is SO many of them its unbelievable, im loosing faith with peugoet its a bit worrying hearing all these problems

TEXThaving suffered the engine cut out problems from both cold start and warm engines and usually whilst slowing down or changing down from 3rd gr to 2nd (although not always) for the last three weeks i have A NEW PROBLEM!!! Today, whilst stopped to let a group of primary school kids cross at a crossing (and in idle) my revs exceeded 45K ALL BY THEMSELVES. Apart from terrifying the little darlings - I dread to think of what could have happened if i had been in gear . I switched the engine off as the revs continued to rise. Upon restarting the revs were in excess of 30K. I pulled to the side of the road and let the engine sit for a while. 5 minutes later all was well again. THIS IS AN UTTERLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND IT WONT BE LONG BEFORE SOMEONE COULD BE KILLED AS A RESULT. I'M STAGGERED TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT PEUGEOT, IT WOULD APPEAR, HAVE DONE NOTHING TO SOLVE IT. HOLD THIS SPACE! please feel free to contact me with your problems. People power and numbers of complaints could get us somewhere here! Many thanks for all the comments folks.

P.S. I'm sur you mean 4.5k and 3k revs, unless you have a monster engine under the bonnet ;-)
