Sticking to the facts here so to not be to controversial, but the gera boxes are rubbish a well known fact all agreed? Right so current stats are Gti 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 133mph Gti 180 0-6 in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 143 Now been looking into this all morning and have found these alternatives Renault clio 182 0-60 in 7.1 seconds and 139 top speed 182 cup 0-60 in 6.9 and top speed of 139 Obviously saxo's are no competition cos there only 1.6 but Civic type r 0-60 in 6.6 and 146 top speed now thats impressive but admitedly out of our price range and insurance for most of us. But u gotta c where im coming from please i wanna stick with peugeot but am shocked by the performance and i havent even mentioned the golf's cos there huge in terms of 206 size. Huff (please dont mention easy mods to get more performance im talking basics her)

Ah but thats not the real measure, what about the in gear times, like 4th 30-70mph dash, now thats the test of translation of the engine -> gearbox -> wheels.
The better that figure the better the acceleration.
I mean who drives their car at 140mph and if it could you wouldn't well not all the time. And who ever uses the full 0-60 dash from the lights, most use the 0-40 dash.

jimmy I think those figures are pretty useless and BS, where did you get them from? from what I understand when Peugeot test drive cars they have 2 people in the car which adds to weight ratio and also it all depends on the driver behind the wheel. a standard Gti is more like about 8 sec flat and probably able to get under 8 sec.

Yeah true but then again the 180 does have an extra 8bhp and is peugeot's flag ship model im talking about top models obviously leaving out the 3.0 v6 model. The 182 and the 180 i mean thats half a second quicker but my main beef is with the gti i mean 8.4 seconds thats just not acceptable i was very set on saving up some more for one of these but it seems if i do i'll be left standing by most other hot hatches.

Sorry to double post didnt c 206rallye's polite post. The facts i found were on Whatcar and Evo, i love the 206's style and it runs rings round all of them especially the 182's lame stripes buuut just wish it had the performance to at least match and have only recently decided to check as im not to impressed with my xs standardly compared to other 1.6's.
Also backed up by the official peugeot brocure u can check online although they quote the gti at 8.3, and thats with driver only is says clearly

Also remember the xs is only 8 valve, the xsi is 16, which makes quite a bit of difference.

Yeah thats true i meant that through the dissapointment of that i thought i would check how good the other engines were as with my next car i dont think i'll bother modifying the engine.

Parkers price guide (& tech data) give different figures again. They give the impression that the GTi (180) is much closer to its rivals.
The Civic is always going to be one of the quickest off the line - has +20bhp over the others plus a six-speed box (closer ratios).
Peugeot have probably lost their crown as the maker of the ultimate hot hatch, but it's still pretty damn good, certainly (IMO) the most good-looking.

You have also got to look at the weight of the car, not just power. Look how fast a Caterham accelarates and these start of with small engines - they are very light.

Here we go...
Check out the magazine and both auto car and EVO tested the 138 GTi 0-60 is 7.8 and 7.4 seconds i think. The in gear times are only marginally slower than the 180. Both tests have 2 occupants in the car.
The GTi if you may think back has been around since 1999....what other modern hatch was around back then??? Quite a few had 130bhp 2 litre engines....the hot hatch market was only just recovering from silly insurance rates... The EW engine was also a new engine from the 406 where clean emissions and good mpg are a priority. That is why big bhp wasn't a priority. You'll also notice (if you look) that the post march 2001 GTis have cheaper road tax which proves how clean the emissions are. If you really want to believe Peugeots figures then go ahead - just remember the GTi-6 0-60 is about 8.5 according to Peugeot! And don't forget the differences between a CTR and a 138 GTi can easily be made up by being a better driver! These cars are all 2 litres and all have similar torque levels...the higher power cars are only faster if you get them in the right gear! If you still want to believe that 206 GTi's are slow then you are quite welcome to go for a run in mine!
And a 138 bhp 2 litre also has more potential built in for tuning! A 180 bhp 2 litre doesn't. And the gearboxes aren't rubbish, their change quality could be better but they are strong and go on forever.
Be careful when comparing power figures as welll. Did you watch Top Gear when they raced a C2 VTS against a Fiesta ST? The Fiesta has 20 bhp more but even though it did win the race, it wasn't by much at all. If that difference means anything to anybody on the road then they shouldn't be on the road!
