No they are special glow in the dark dial faces. Lots of American modified cars have them. You can see it the FnF2 in his skyline, when after the first race and they bump over the bridge, he does a big handbrake to camera. You see see them then if you pause it.

Both wrong im afraid. They are electroilluminescent as seen in focus rs. They are powered by transformer(as they only need the minmal amount of power to charge them) At the touch of a button they can change from blue to green to aqua to purple. Also 8 different brightness's for each colour. And white during the day. A friend of mine had them custom made for 3 of us. I am very very happy with them. total cost £90 Ive also just changed the horrible orange aircon control and clock to a very cool blue with purple writing. Pics very soon

Ive got a 99gti. A pic of my lil baby >> The dial unit is a total git to get apart. Take out of dash. Around the edge at the back of the unit (where it changes from black to white plastic) you basically prize it apart. You will see as u go long there is moulded clips from the white plastic, clipping over the Black. Theres also 2 metal clips on one side, prize them out and the unit will eventually open (the unit is hinged, and these clips are on the hinged side) Open it up and your looking at the circuit board on the back of the dials . If you want to get to the front of the dials be careful not to pull the ribbon connector from the milometer away from the circuit board. It comes away very very easily. Ive pulled mine off and ive no idea what so ever of how to re-attach it again

Now my GTi dial backside is nothing like how you describe.
thewardster has done the same as you with the ribbon cable, I suggest some conductive glue from Maplins, but I think he stuck with Blue tak and masking tape

Thanks for the advise mate. Im actually off to Maplins this dinnertime to buy some LED bulbs so conductive glue it is The pics i posted is the best i can do im afraid. I cant stop my damn flash going off on my digital camera when its dark. But the colours are alot better than you can tell in the pics. I ordered them via my mate 4 months ago and i cant remember where he got them from. BUT, i will find out for you and post a number or name asap. Big Ol ... have u got any pics of your dial unit at all? Maybe i can help get you into it?

I have got a picture of the reverse side of my dials, but I now sent the dial kit back. Will post one up for reference sake. I am assuming yours looks like the wardsters does in the "how to" section.
That Maplins glue, IMO will work, but it a liquid and you may need to only apply to the points not across the whole strip as that might then bridge connections that aren't supposed to be bridged. Therefore it might not make it a very strong hold, and it will be unbeleviably fiddly. Take a good look at it first.

Yes mate mine is exactly the same as thewardsters dial unit. Multiplex must be different then. Seems strange to me though. Ive actually been to maplins and they are about as much use as a choclate flip flop. Ive actually bought some silver connector paint/glue. But i may give the blu tac a go 1st

What did you use to colour the aircon unit? I'll have a look at mine tonight to see about taking it off, the only thing is I need to get the stereo out and its a bugger with the ammount of wires I have behind there ie sub sires and bluetooth car kit wires BTW, have you seen my dials in the gallery section? I think I prefer the light only on the writing not the dial face, each to his own they still look nicer then the originals!

Thewardster - I removed the orange filters and replaced them with dark purple ones. Now the clock and the aircon are purple with red lettering. Looks pretty cool. Yes ive seen the metal monkey ones before. They look really really smart. But during the day im not to kean on the brushed steel, thats why i had these done.
BigOL - Yes mate its totally different to mine. BUT it has to come apart. I take it youve removed all the screws and pulled and pushed and poked it, trying to open it up. Definately looks like it would come apart lolol

Nope it doesn't come apart, and I have had that confirmed by Diag. It is most definately a sealed unit. I have not taken the screws out as you can clearly see what they hold in. The top two hold the mileage display, and the others that hold the black frame hold the rheostats for the dial pins in place. I had prodded and poked, and their were no clips holding the black surround to the white casing which you can clearly see behind the PCB. Even had a torch down the frame edge to see if I could see clips but there wasn't any. Didn't want to venture to far incase I screwed them up and it would be an expensive to replace the unit. I am positive it would come apart with a hammer ;D;D;D;D
