Ok, i'd like to mod my GTi but don't wanna go 'hardcore' as it were until i'm happy with modifying. So what can you suggest for small/modest power/performance(or accelearation) gains without a great deal of cutting/fitting/bodging together

Mullet - Seriously, get a decent backbox (I paid £165), and a K&N Panel Air filter (£35.00 tops) When I first got my motor I thought it was quick, then after I while I thought this ain't that quick anymore, then when I fitted my bits, I thought it was quick again, thats how much difference it makes. Thats a good start anyway.

Yeah i'm seriously considering the air filter (nice n easy bolt on) i'll have to save some cash up and go nuts with the modding i think but in the mean time an air filter will have to do

When you look at the cost of the K&N filter, and the fact its rechargeable - if that matters, you could afford to replace it once a year anyway against what Pug charge for their paper one. (about £12 inc fitting (which ain't much))

The panel filter is a must, never mind modifying. It allows the engine to pull from lower revs and breath a bit quicker, you will notice the difference, not faster as such but better delivery of power and more spread of torque, i also got more MPG. I fitted one in 5 mins and it cost me £28. I have also fitted a new exhaust system, only because the old one failed, Peugeot wanted about £180 fitted for the back box and it was not in stock. Opted for the Magnex Back box at about £165, but it turned out my mid section had failed so it ended up as a full Miltek system for £325 fitted (stainless) This has put the bottom end back to where it was if you know what I mean, it needs the old amount of revs to pootle in top gear, but it feels so much quicker above 3800rpm the mpg is back to normal too.

I did pretty much the same as Nigel - K&N Filter a few months ago and a Powerflow exhaust from the Cat back after the original one failed. Very happy with the improved pickup (and a nicer sound...). I'd certainly recommend it as a starting point for your modding career!!

Where do you get these powerflow exhausts. I have looked on their website and appears that you specify online what you want - but how the hell do you know what to get etc.
Reason why I went for a high quality direct replacement for mine from Magnex

Somewhere on the website was a link to a list of dealers - I just selected a local one and phoned them up. Took my car in on a Saturday lunchtime, told them exactly what look/sound I wanted, picked the tail-pipe that I wanted and left them to it. 3 hours later it was finished. It was a place called RSR tyres in Bromley (South East London) that I went to.

I've had my GTi about 6 months now, 3 months in i decided to get a K&N panel filter £28 - [glow=red,2,300]Cheap as Chips[/glow] - As Mr David 'Bargain Hunt' thingyinson would say ;D. As a result car was more responsive - not really any quicker but the pickup was significantly better. This was really emphasised when I put the old paper filter in when the car went to Pug for some warranty work!! Well anyway about month and half ago decided to get a performance back box - plumped for a Magnex as it's designed for the car. Looks the business and is manufactured to an extremely high standard. Car sounds much better and engine seems to rev more freely now. Overall may have added a couple of BHP here or there but the main plus point is the driveability - much more responsive.
