Well, I've just got back from my local Peugeot dealer after taking my car in for them to look for a rattle.
It sounded like the tappets, but never happens when the car is cold or hot, just in between.
It only occurs under load ( whilst accelerating quite hard ) and is most prevelant between 2 and 3000 rpm in third and fourth gear.
I'd already convinced myself it was the doubkle skin of the exhaust manifold making the noise as I believe this is quite a common problem on GTi's.
I spoke to the peugeot 'master tech' and told him these symptoms and what I believed it was.
He immediatly began to smile and said that's exactly what he was going to say it was, but he said he'd take it for a test drive just to check.
He basically said it wasn't the loudest he'd heard by a long way, and even if I did change the manifold, there was a chance that the new one would rattle to some extent anyway.
His opinion was if I could live with the rattle then leave it.
He wrote the VIN number down on the back of his cigarette packet a dissapeared into the back of the dealers, coming back moments later with the part numbers for a manifold (£96+vat) and the gasket (£4+vat).
Labour was going to be £100+vat, so all in about £230 to 'possibly' get rid of a rattle.
He left the part numbers with me in case I wanted to do it myself as the car is no longer under warranty.
Ummmm, what to do next?
Does anyone know of an aftermarket manifold that ain't double skinned and will fit directly onto a standard exhaust?
Does anyone else have this rattle?
Ohhhh.......... decisions, decisions
Another quality Peugeot product then, at least the 'master tech' was honest and didn't string me a line of bull. That make a refreshing change then!
