Hi, I just bought my 2nd hand GTI and found the battery of date/clock display is running out. Is there anyway I could exchange the battery by myself? I dont know how to start with and cannot get any idea from the manual...
Cheers, Stan

If you battery is running down then drive it about a bit, that will charge the battery. If its the clock setting you are talking about then the manual will help you out. But you basically push a combination of the left and right buttons to cycle through the options.
How do you know your battery is not storing sustainable charge??
If you have only just bought it then get the dealer you got it from to fit a new one FOC.

what do you mean the battery is going? you sure you dont mean the screen is fading, that only means your bulbs at the back have gone.......on the GTI there are 3 sets of bulbs if one has gone then it seems faded and dim.....
there isnt a seperate battery for the clock...does it not turn on at all?

Do you mean the time is not correct on it?. If so press left button until you get hours then right button to change. press left again for minutes the right to change.

The other option is if the display says low battery then it could be your keyfob for the remote locking etc
The ECU gets a measurment of the battery power in the keyfob & will display if it is getting low. It may just be that.
Can you clarify why you say that you have a low battery.

Hi, Thanks all for your advice. Actually my car's battery is fine and it's my date/clock display at centre hv problem. The light showing time is 'on' but it cannot be read, eg. say it is 10:00pm now and the light is showing in broken line like "1 L:LL". I assume it is the small battery inside is running down (eg. like the one in calculaor?). ANy idea I can fix it? changing fuse? changing battery? and how?
Kind Regards, Stan

I would imagine it's more likely to be the data ribbon that connects to the back of the LCD panel, I had a similar problem when I chaged my dash backing and I ripped off the cable by accident... try and see if the ribbon is partially loose and fix it down by wedging some blu tak behind the cable between the clock display and the casing. Hopefully that will sort it out.
There is no battery for the clock, the power feeds directly from the battery i.e. if the battery is disconnected for a few minutes you'll have to reset the clock again.

be careful too that you get the correct one as there are several types of HUD units in pugs these days... there are plain simple digit ones for time only, ones which shwo outside temp and cd controls, and one more that I have seen that also tells you if doors are open etc...

Hi, Many thanks for the notes. Does anyone known where there is any pics shown for the process, like how to detach the display unit?
Cheers, Stan
