Ok, so I opened my Car door last nite (in darkness) and thought "Hmmm, something's not right here?" ......YEP - THIS ISN'T MY CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fortunately it was a Peugeot replacement which had been dropped at my house yesterday morning (without my knowledge - i was at work) and my car had been taken back in to sort out an airbag fault for the 100th time which they failed to look at last week Anyway looked ok, brand new, only 70 miles on the clock. Nice I thought - That is until i started up the engine and moved off....Where the hell was the power? Turns out its a 1.1 and does 60 in no less than 15.8 seconds, double that of the GTi. Not so much a problem on normal roads but on the motorway it was like going backwards. Slightest hint of a gradient and the speed would drop straight off no matter how much foot you applied. Certainly made me appreciate the power difference. Don't think i could ever drop smaller than a 1.8 now! One thing that was interesting though....The gearbox is about 10x more EFFICIENT & SMOOTHER than my GTi! Very annoying - Why?

How many wheel spins did you pull, I had to plant my foot right down to get it to do them. ;D
It was slow in comparison to my 1.6 aswell, I would never drop below a 1.6 now, not tried n e faster so cant compare!!
Cant wait to test drive the GTi!!!

Wheel Spin Lee? Don't make me laugh - Physically impossible in that car....Its drives like an automatic! Not too sure about the "King of the Road" seating position or the feather-light handling at high speeds either - dangerous!

1.1,1.4 and 1.6 have same type of gearbox. 2.0 is different. Don't know about diesels. Yoy would think they would give the gti a 'sporty' change. Just had courtesy car for 2 days. honda civic 1.4. Don't think much of looks or interior but nice engine! Doesn't get any noisier at redline. only 90 horse tho'.

Can't really go wrong with a Honda engine mate Really disappointed with the gearbox on my GTi....Driven alot of cars and its by far the most fiddly and awkward one i've experienced! Wonder what the 180 gearbox is like?

Oggs - Do you ever have the problem where you can't put it into 1st gear when you're coming to a standstill and getting ready to move off again?
Also what's your 1st > 2nd gear change like? Mine (like most GTi's) can sometimes by awkward to slip into gear & is useless when trying to change up fast!
Cheers. J

Shifting from 1st to 2nd is the same with all 206's as the syncro-mesh effects the movement, not sure technically how it works but i remember reading a thread about it before, you cant shift fast from 1st to 2nd but shifting to other gears is fine
As for coming to a stand still, if youre doing over 10mph the syncromesh can't keep synchronised at that speed hence why you can't shift down until you slow down enough.

Cheers Wardy - maybe some of it was slightly psychological but i could swear the change from 1st to 2nd was better in this brand new Pug. It is def a shorter throw than my GTi Know what u mean about the 1st gear problem to - Sometimes it may well be that i'm travelling too fast when i try to engage i, but other times i'm practically standstill and it still won't go in! Personally i reckon they've fobbed me off with a reconditioned gearbox or something....The original one had a fault (i t broke ) and they replaced it under warranty, so me thinks they did it on the cheap As for the QS i wouldn't mind one but i'm very wary of messing with these things.....They already look for enough excuses why its not a 'warranty matter' when dealing with other problems and i don't want to give them ANY more ammunition

PugGTi02, what the problem with the 1.1 206's?from what your sayin all the 206's should be like your gti?just for the truth my 1.1 does 0-60 in approx 13 seconds and will do 115 mph on a flat road, ive blew off 1.4 206,1.4 hdi 206,1.4 saxo,1.3 16v yaris, and numerous other "low powered crap cars".enough said.

Calm down mate, never said the car was crap its just v.slow if you're used to driving a GTi - Fact! Its a good little car for under 7.5k no doubt ......Still reckon i could beat it on foot in a 50m sprint though!

i have to agree that the gti gearbox can be a little hard sometimes and does occaisionally require manhandling into postion. yes puggti i have had to force it into first at lights before and I have even had to double declutch to put it in reverse lol i too could never go back to a lower powered car (unless it was the fabia VRS)
