AOL are upgrading my connection to 1mb from 512kps...... BT have done with same with my friends connection from 1mb to 2mb.... my upgrade is due in MAY, BT have already carried out the upgrade on my mates connection... both UNLIMITED download
has anyone else been given upgrades on thier connections? NTL etc etc?
all these upgrades are due to the drop of prices on broadband.....so if your paying over the odds than change over....
AOL - 512kps 17.99 and 1MB 24.99 (the prices now)

BT are doling mine upto 2mb, but probably will be 1mb as my distance from exchange is too far for 2mb.
It will be done by march 15th.
But AFAIK, is limited to download.

Im payin about £30 for mine its with freeserve, but i dunno the speed or anything how can i find out? from the website its says 27.99 your should get * 1Mbps * Up to 20 times faster than dial-up with 30G download limit a month.... do you have two green arrows in your task bar? one facing down another up? hover the mouse over it and it says the speed of you connection...mine says 288 upstream/ 576 downstream in other words 0.5mb connection... Bad-co i think my mate had a 30gb a month prior on 1MB but since he was upgraded it had the limit taken off

if you have past a years contract with them then CHANGE(otherwise your bound to 12 months if not). your paying much over the odds..... you sure you havent got you phone line with them aswell?
either way for 17.99 you can get what your getting now from AOL... but find out which ISP serves in your area, which for reading should be most of them.... BIG is more on the know how on this

288 is your upload speed and 576 your download speed, but when you take into consideration overheads on the line (things that degrade the quality) you work down to 256 upload and 512 download. You are entry level ADSL now. I have been regraded by BTY to 2 mbps and you can feel it. Pages load the second you click on them. Also BTY is offering a three month offer of £27 instead of £30 at the mo, but will return back to £30 at the end. BTY still has a 30Gb download limit even for 2mpbs, however, this won't be introduced until June/July and the other suppliers later on, cos the techology has only been made that can measure you usage. ISP's started to get people thinking in download limits early so that they can impose them later on and you have time to adjust your browsing and download habits. If anyone wants to test their speed and compare it use this. Very good www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.aspIf you really want to know what your line can take check www.samknows.comInstead of speed increases BT should work to be upgrading and lowering the cost of SDSL, that would rock, but they are more interested in download than upload speeds.

call AOL (if you wish to go with them) and say you already have Broadband but what to transfer to AOL service of 17.99.. they may charge a small one off £10 or so fee but its better than the extra £10 your already paying monthly..... AOL will do the rest for you since you dont need new equipment or nothing

If you are outside of the year contract now you are on a pay as you go service. You need to ring your ISP and ask for a MAC (Migration authorisation code) which you will give to your new chosen ISP. Its your unique idenifier of you ADSL sevice with BT and Freeserve.
Your new provider will then take you MAC number and forward it to your old ISP and ask for them to stop supplying and they will take over. You will be without the net for a couple of days during the changeover.
Works the same way as mobile contracts do. Old provider gives you a number you use the transfer number (MAC) to issue the new provider permission to use your existing number onto their service and disconnect the old one on your behalf.
ISP Customer Services WILL give you a MAC number, do not take no nuts about I can't give you that and we will forward it by email, they can give it to your there and then, they will play for time for you to change your mind and offer you all kinds of special offers to make you stay.
Personally for a 1mpbs service I would stick with Freeserve but ask to come down to a lower limit contract as you on the best they offer at the mo. You can come down to a 2gb limit for about £18 and that should be fine for the browser/light user
Edits: Spelling
P.S Don't go AOL - Not Good. Personal thing, but I wouldn't.

I hate the whole AOL customised browers crap and exclusivity on movie trailers due to the tie up with the movie place they merged with Time Warner I think. And I don't want to support a company that can't afford good TV ad's
BT has Clarkson - Cool Fella Freeserve - has hippy dope people - cool AOL - Some dippy git that can't download photo's cos he's on 256 in really small print in the bottom of the screen - CRAP
