A standard panel filter upgrade (like K&N) - will not change your fuel comsuption by much or at all. And this means the power gains are only minimal.
An induction kit - will had a nice sporty sound it will drink more fuel (a noticable amount) but you will gain more acceleration (a noticable amount)
An induction kit with cold air feed - will dramatically do both, drink your fuel but add alot of acceleration, basically the colder the air the faster the reaction so the faster the fuel burns.
Hope this helps

A cold air feed brings in colder air which is more dense therefore you pack more of it into the cylinder, which then means that when the burn takes place you make the efficency of the burn greater thus making more power - bang for buck theory. As with all things they are aren't 100% efficient, you leave some unburnt fuel in the cylinder, the more oxygen there is the longer an more effcient the burn becomes.

lee, u make the induction kit with cold air feed or forced air sound like it will transform your car into a 5 sec 0-60 car?

Well as i don't really want to spend too much, is a air filter worth the cash?

Even getting a basic K&N panel filter noticeably improved the pick-up on my GTi. Probably doesn't contribute to any gain in BHP but does make a difference to driveability... On that basis I'd say it's definitely worth the £30 or so that it cost.

I wouldn't for an air filter, although techincally you should.
An air filter is not going to create anything more than about 1hp extra and thats going to be in a cold day. Although it will effect the driveability of the engine alot.
If your insurance company jumps up and down about an air filter then change. Do a test, ring them up and tell them you thinking about putting on an induction kit which is something you would have to tell them about. If they lift the price enourmously then tell them about filter, if they don't move the price then say you won't bother and fit an air filter and be happy.

its 50/50 with a air filter (not induction kit) as u have to remove the airbox cover to inspect it...........so u have to asj yourself, how likely is it that the insurance inspector person will unscrew the cover off to see the air filter??
but a induction kit is pretty obvious once u open the bonnet.

It's not that, it's whether if i have a crash (having only recently passed my driving test) whether if they find i have an air filter my insurance would be void?
