Ok, this will probably sound stupid to those of you in the 'know' (sale etc) but why would you want an oil cooler, surely you want the oil to be hot to lubricate the engine etc better? Or is this purely for seriously modded cars that could start to 'cook' the oil?

I think it is for lots over the original power motors, that can't cope with normal oils. Plus also if you run you car near the limit all the while then I guess it helps to not cook the oil.

An oil cooler is there to prevent the oil from over heating. Semi Synthetic oil can withstand temps upto about 130-140 degrees. Fully Synthetic can withstand temps upto around 200 degrees unless its racing oil. If the temp goes higher than the oil can withstand, it will break down and no longer do its job and lubricate properly.
But ideally the oil really wants to be kept around the 95-100 degrees mark. So if your oil is getting hotter than that point, regularly......better to get an oil cooler.

So it's not necessarily for 'high performance' cars then? It just depends how you drive?

High perperformance cars will tend to be driven harder more often......so will usually come with an oil cooler.
But anything that is going to get worked hard and will get hot.......should probably have an oil cooler.
A lot of HGVs will have oil coolers.
