What sort of driving? What sort of roads? Lead foot? What engine was in the 106? I get 45.9MPG (on trip computer) out of mine when going to and from work along A / B roads. Its not as good as the 1.4 HDi's get but still alot better than my old clunky Escort TD. If you have a tendancy to use the acceleration to the fullest then it does eat into the economy alot. I also noticed that when going along motorways at MPH (lets just say it will get you 3 points and not 6) my trip computer shows high 30's for MPG so this could be the reason.

i have been driving fairly steady (no thashing round town or flat out thru the gears) & mostly on a bypass (6m)to work with some other longer journeys as well on good roads.the 106 had a 1.5 D engine R reg 55k on clock.i thought the 2.0 HDI was meant to average 55 mpg.

I can reach 55mpg when doing very long runs at about 60MPH, If I take it easy then I can get even more than that. Best so far was 600 miles and 100 miles left on the trip computer for a full tank.
Your old engine was smaller and did not have a turbo. The bigger more powerful engine and turbo on the HDi will both eat into the economy in the same way as going from a 1.4 petrol to a 2.0 petrol will. I would let it settle in a bit as well, I went from 43MPG upto 45.9MPG as I got used to the car (and vice versa). Check that the aircon is not on etc as all this eats into the economy slightly.
My 45.9MPG is doing 13miles each way into work. Short trips do bring the economy down slightly as it uses more fuel to warm the engine up quickly.
