Where is the noise coming from? There could be a number of reasons. Does it seem to come from a wheel or suspension? is it just infront of you (in the engine bay) or somewhere else?

the noise comes from the engine bay and it is hard to pinpoint exactly where from it is a really loud tapping noise it is always there whether in neutral or in gear. the tapping gets faster as you increase the revs.

Could be tappets? Im no expert on tapping noises fromt he engine bay. Ive had suspension troubles and know about the noises from those areas, but not the engine bay Im affraid, will have to wait on another member who might know!

Just spoke to BigOl, he suggests that, as well as it might be the tappets, it could also be the cams knocking on the valves, and to check your oil.
Theres an small chance it could be low head pressure caused by low oil level, or possible beginnings of failure of oil pump, but he doubts that.

is it worth just changing the tappets first to see if that solves the problem. there is oil getting to the head as i have already checked i changed the oil the other day to see if it would cure the problem but it didnt.

Its a big big job, you gotta strip the engine down and get the head skimmed. Im not sure if it could be anything else, Id wait for another member to advise!
Also from BigOl:
if the noise has just happened then I would also suggest the cambelt

Check all drive belts to make sure they aren't fouling on anything. How many miles on the car?

I take it it isn't under warranty? Could also be water pump, alternator or A/C compressor.
