Hi, i am considering buying the 1.9 diesel 206 and am wondering if there are many common problems that have been experienced with these cars. I have read a lot of the problem pages and have seen problems on the petrol cars, some of these problems seem very worrying. Any advice on this model would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Scott.

I owned one for 2.5 years, and it served me reasonably well. It's a bit noisy (older diesel technology), and not very nippy, but it'll get you from A to B and is reasonably economical (I averaged around 45mpg). The engine is pretty bulletproof as pug have been using it for years; it'll do 200K without a problem & if it's well looked after.
There aren't any particular problems to look out for, check the glowplugs work as it may be difficult to start on cold mornings otherwise.
The only other things to look out for are the non-engine related problems you find on 206s, e.g. annoying rattles, ball joint failures and so on.
I would only buy one if you couldn't stretch to an HDi version - they're much quieter, quicker and more economical.

The 1.9D is group 4 insurance.
A 1.4HDi is also group 4, so will be around the same price.
A 2.0HDi will be in group 5 (occasional group 6), so not much more expensive.
Do some insurance quotes at somewhere like directline.com (no affiliation) to get an idea.

The only problem with the 1.9 Diesel is the speed and acceleration. I test drove one of these before I got my 1.6 and never again!!
It sounded like a tank, was really so to pull away and gain speed!! I suppose its better on fuel economy but why dont you get a 1.4 mate. Would be so much better and not that bad on insurance!!

I would look at the 1.4HDi personally. It may seem a bit slower (70 odd BHP) but it is worth the extra refinement. It sounds quieter than the 1.9 diesel & does alot more MPG, it can also be chipped to over 90BHP (Standard 2.0HDi is 90BHP) so can be very nippy (add an intercooler for even more power). Compairing an old diesel to a petrol is not fair, things have come along way since the old days. I love my HDi, even compaired to the petrol cars I test drove, its even better now its chipped (no where is the price list for the intercooler). The problems as such are mainly on the petrol cars, the diesel does not use the same ECU or any components from the petrol engine. Its only the basic things that are common. The main problem on the HDi's are the crankshaft drive belt pully, this breaks up after a while. If you are looking to buy a 2nd hand one get the cambelt changed, waterpump replaced and the pully changed if its done more than 50K miles. Oh, mine is a group 7 (I had to go for the XSi )
