I had a sound like that just before one of my pulley wheels sawed through a power steering pump pipe that had dropped onto it. I presume you have had a good look round to make sure nothing is rubbing? If it is the water pump pulley it probably means the bearing is worn and if it's like on other cars I've had they start to leak from around the bearing before they fail. I'd keep an eye on your coolant temp, just in case it starts to leak big time.

My car is making a bit of a noise like that, high pitched, like whizz you get from a jet engine starting up (just the whistling sound) is this the same noise?

lol no! It is making a kind of whistley noise though, the best description is the whistle off of a jet engine! increasing in pitch as the revs get higher!
