My engine diagnostic light on my (80k) Gti has been on for about two years. When I had the exhaust replaced recently they replaced the oxy sensor. For a brief while the diagnostic light remained unlit but not for long.
It's now back to it's normal state. I have had it reset on previous occasions as well and every time it comes back on again. I am not too worried about it. The car generally runs okay!!!!
I too get the occasional cutting out / lumpy behaviour but it is usually very short lived.
Funny thing is I recently took it in for it's service and Peugeot told me the engine management light was on (No Sh*t Sheerlock).
They told me that i might need a new oxy sensor. I had to laugh as they had only just put a new one on about a fortnight earlier.

Will, Your diagnostic light has been on for 2 years. I didn't think it would pass MOT emissions test if light was on. When mine came on, car was a dog and felt a lot slower. ps My car has 2 lambda probes either side of cat.

Yeah it passed it's MOT okay. In fact twice in think. I am not sure whether the garages kit was on the blink those days but I was a little surprised (and pleased).
I guess it depends exactly why your light is on.
I had assumed it was the lamda sensor but i guess no one has really given me a decent explanation. Bearing in mind that the pug garage recently changed my lambda and the light has still come back on again.
PS i think that the early ones (pre 2002) have only one lambda - but that is only what i have managed to pick up from other threads in this forum.
Mine is a 2000 !!!!!!!!!!!!

By counting them. ;D Seriously, I was round every sensor and switch when the car was misfiring. Earlier 206s had one lambda, later cars have 2. I think the 1 lambda gti has 137hp, the 2 lambda 138hp. Don't ask me how or why.

Thats quite funny. Lol
Count them!!!!!!!
Yep thats certainly one way......
It would mean getting under the car.
Not a place that I have ever been.
Only chance of finding me being anywhere in that area is by some freak accident. Maybe, if my own car ran down a hill and I was mown down - like in Casulaty.
Thats what I pay blokes who drink very sugary tea to do.
Same with my PC. For all I known there is a hamster in a wheel inside.
Seriously though I always just assumed I had only one. I will make a genuine effort to have a look. Not having a pit or any ramps may prove a bit of a problem though.
if i do habe two then maybe I do need a new another new lambda sensor then. Whats the odds that it does not really fix the engine management light problem though.

My car has a warranty but if anything goes wrong, I always have a look first to see if it is anything obvious. I would never pay someone to do what I could do myself.
