just to make sure, does the problem disappear when the engine is fully warmed up? if so the its the same prob i had before, its the release barings on the clutch, the only way i was told to sort this was to replace the clutch, will cost ya bout £170-£220 depending on where u go, but drive around asking for prices first.
if they try flog u off with a new gearbox, tell them to shove it! also if ur thinking of getting a quickshift too, then nows the time to do, it coz they will be under your car with access to it, so 2 birds with one stone!

fan belt? i say this because on my saxo wen starting up in the mornings used would make a screeching noise...once the clutch was depressed the noise stopped.. as it reduces pressure on a cold engine start.....u learn that when u borrow b4stard R5 Turbo's off friend for the week to do the school run when ur car is off road!

I'm sure my old Fiesta used to do that but I never got to the bottom of it. Fan Belt was what I was told at the time, prob due to the cold weather, freezing etc...

thats what i thought initially, but the AA geezer looked at it one (as he happen to nip into my work place to drop someone off) he said straight away it sounds like the release baring, so armed with this news i went to the garage and ask them what was wrong (so i know if they were trying to fleece me) but they were honest and said it was the release baring and problem was sorted!

So not likely to be fan belt then, do as Chi did and ask the garage to check it. You are now armed with the info, dont let them over charge you!!
Well Done Chi, and like the new avatar, what do you feel on most days ? ha ha

my problem was this......
........when i start it up first thing, the noise will be there (a sort of crinding noise) very like the timing belt, but when the clutch is depressed, it is not there anymore......after driving for say 30-45mins on A roads and motorways, the noise disappears, until it cools down again.
my exact problem was the release baring in the clutch but if your noise is stil there after its warmed up, then your prob might be it, tho dont rule it out.

I have got the exact problem. I have a 206 1.4LX, and it makes no difference if the car is warmed up or not. When the clutch is pressed the noise disappears. I've had this noise for about a month. Please let me know what the problem was if you solve it.

well if it only happens when it is cold but it disappears when you press the clutch, your gearbox oil could be low, beacuse when the gearbox warms up the oil expands, but it also could be your thrust bearing because it has got no grease in it no more.
