Ok heres the story.
My 206 GTi (post 2001 model) has a blown exhaust, the pipe from the mid setion has snapped off at the entry to the back box. I think ok lets go and get it fixed, I'll save some money and go to my local garage. The guy said there was no mention of my 2 lambda sensor exhaust in his book so he would phone peugeot for the part. He quoted me 570 GB pounds for the part not including vat and fitting!
Fine then, off to Kwik Fit, they quoted me 330 pounds including fitting. apparently the whole system needs replaced because it doesnt come in sections. I thought this was still quite expensive.
Is this really how much I should be paying for this or are these people taking the mick?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Yeah, afraid so. Dunno prices are right, but Peugeot 206's centre section includes the catalyst as there is no joint between the catalyst and the backbox.
So the price you are being quoted includes a new cat. This is another common problem with the 206 that this end corrodes, but there is no option for just a centre section.
I have heard that some kwick fit places will offer to cut the corroded bit off and weld a new bit onto the good bit of the centre section, but I don't know if they still offer that. Personally I would find a guy who would. Another option would be to sleeve part of the centre section and get the oversized pipe welded up to the original.

There is an option and will cost less than £41!!!! Plus £25 to fit it and you are back on the road for £65. Timax do a repair section - it's for the 1 lambda car but can be modified to fit the 2 lambda car. If you have a 2 lambda car then you need to get somebody with a welder to cut a 3 inch or so section (between end and first box) from the new part and weld the end back on. Costs me £25 in labour to get mine done.. Available from here. Dont forget to get a new clamp for the back box too... www.buypartsby.co.uk/exhausts_make.php

I had my exhaust replaced recently on a 206 GTI. It was the whole lot from front to back including CAT and new oxy sensor. It cost £900. It was done by peugeot with all pug parts.
Charlie Brown did not want to touch it as it would have required too much specialist pug tools / info.
I had wondered whether you could use non pug parts but I am not sure that they are widely available for the gti.

Yes i thought the price was was a bit lively. I was not too surprised b'coz the guys at Charlie Browns reckoned it was gonna be pretty heafty as well.. Though i cannot remember the exact price they were quoting, i am sure it was about £500 just for the parts.
I was frickin desperate to get it changed as i had a few trips organized. If had a bit more time i might have shopped around, but some time you just have to take it up the back passage for conveniences sake.
Previously I had the back box replaced and the guy at the garage just sawed it off. Where he cut it, was pretty close to the Oxy sensor and i think he damaged it or the cables. Because that's when some of my engine management light problems began. So that bad experience put me off "cheap solutions".
Bearing in mind that Charlie Browns did not want to go near it (and i assumed other exhaust places would be the same) I had little option but to go with Pug.
The real killer is that i will be ready to sell it pretty soon. The exhaust is nearly worth more than the car!!!!

WOW, pug's exhausts are expensive.
Ok, Powerflow did my system on the XSi HDi mainly because I wanted a low purr from it that the original did not have, but also because I have heard about the failure of the back box and wanted to get it done before that happened.
The system from CAT back was £220 and fully stainless steel.

Mine is a 2001 with 2 lambdas. The exhaust was changed before I got it. The pipe was cut just about 4 inches after second lamda so it can be done.

It's the gti ones that are the expensive ones. Not sure whether the more main stream version are any where near as lively.

I had a 'cat back' center section in stainless made up for £170. It was custom built on the spot within an hour of me arriving with no appointment. It's got a lifetime warrenty as long as the vehicle is in my ownership. I got peed off with the krapy Pug repair sections that only seem to last for about 2 years max. Mine had gone twice in 3 years that I owned the car! I had posted on this before because of the stupid prices some garages and dealers are trying to get out of ill advised people. 206infoexchange.proboards22.com/index.cgi?board=Problems&action=display&thread=1111242034This is a well known problem and there are numerous posts on this very forum with ideas for a cheaper solution. Kwik-fit do do a fix, but you have to take the car in for a quote because apparently there are 2 different diameters of exhaust pipe fitted to the GTi and they need to find out which. When phoned them they had the cheapest one (about £70) in stock or they had to order the other which was more expensive. They just cut off the old exhaust pipe behind the cat and sleave over the new rear section. I really don't know why some places seem to have such an issue with it as it is only basic pipe making at the end of the day. Any good exhaust place who fabricates it's own systems will have no problems in knocking one up in no time. They will fit new mounting for lambda probes etc. It's not like the Pug GTi incorporates alien technology or anything! I really think maybe we should have a sticky at the start of the problems thread to tell people not to even entertain the idea of spending huge sums of cash on a fix which at best will only last a few years.
