Can anyone please Help!!
Got my X Reg 206 GTi just under a week ago and it has over heated while waiting in traffic!
Noticed that the temperture went up to 90C and there was smoke coming from the Bonnet and the STOP light on the dash board was flashing!!
I pulled over right away and turned the engine off and called the RAC. When the bloke got there and told me that the switch has gone that controls the Fans cause bascially when the car gets hot the Fans should come on but they didnt thats why it over heated.
Rang Peugeot and there told me that the 206 doesnt even have a switch so not sure what the f**k is going on, If anyone can please help then i would be very greatful... Thanks People!

90 C is the normal operating temperature for the engine. The fans don't cut in until the needle goes towards the next black notch.
As for the smoke, Hmmmm, that doesn't sound good. Take the radiator cap off when the engine is cool, and check the seal. As for your stop light coming on, it could be warning you of the possible failure of the water pump. Try this, see how long it takes your motor when standstill to get to 90. It should take about 5-10 minutes, if its shorter then you have no cooling. Keep running until the needle goes to 90 and ever so slightly beyond, see if the fan cuts in. Then switch off. DO NOT OVER HEAT THE ENGINE (i.e don't go to the next marker after 90 you will warp the head and other bits too).
You could have a simple radiator or pipe leak.
This way you will test the whole system. If this is happening, then I suggest you go to the garage.

My GTi always seems to run at between 90 and the next marker - is this bad too?

It shouldn't run above 90 under normal conditions. If you are in traffic or the general climate is warm then it should fluctuate over 90 but never stay there. Normal temp running at 70mph on motorway should be 90 and no more. In traffic between 90 and the next marker.
If the engine is new (under 750 miles) then it will run hot as it settles in, but if you have more miles than this it shouldn't be over 90
Check your coolant level, as it may have dropped thus causing the "hotness"

Mine normally runs with the water temp needle pointing straight up. Don't know what that temp is off hand, but it hardly wavers summer or winter. As for your problem, I used to have a Rover (stop laughing! )which would intermitantly overheat. I'd check the coolant level everyday for about 2 weeks after it did it the first time and never saw it drop at all. Then all of a sudden it would overheat big style and there would hardly be any coolant left. So I'd fill it up, check for leaks, check compression on the cylinders etc and find no probs. It would be fine for a few weeks and then it would do it all over again. I was about to take the head off because I thought it must be the head gasket, when I nudged the wiring to the fan and it started up(the fan that is). It turned out to be a crappy connector where the wiring connects to the fan. It was intermitantly not working, causing the fan not to work and boiling off my coolant. The coolant resevoir cap normally is a pressure relief valve so as to let of excess pressure (and steam). Are you sure it was smoke, not steam? (Sorry I don't mean to sound patronising, just trying to help.) It could be a wiring fault with the fan or it may be something else. Was it a dealer you got it off or was it a private sale? If it was a dealer I'd take it back and get them to do the leg work. Don't dispair, I'm sure the might of the 206infoexchange can give you some help. Let us know how you get on and what caused it. Good luck, Jonney.

My 206 gti 99 V Plate Gets very hot in traffic the fan hardly goes off. Once its cooled it down to 90 its back up and the fans going again! Theres quite a bit of steam and you can see the heat in the air coming from the bonnet. I dont really know if this is normal, its never overheated where I have had to stop.

The GTi engine will get hot in traffic, its quite a big engine to sit in a small engine bay, it also IMO have a small radiator for the size of engine also. This I think is why it gets hot so quickly. If you are moving it shouldn't run above the 90 mark.
Any engine will get hot in traffic as it works on the basis that 50% or more cooling will come from air flow over the engine and radiator rather than pure water cooling.
Steam will occur as the boiling water in the system gets vented. This is why some people/maufacturers recommend using a coolant rather than water.

do you mean there was smoke coming out or steam? If it's steam does it have a strong distinct smell as this could be coolant? Mine overheated after I had driven 60 miles on the motorway and then got stuck in traffic on country roads. All the gauges read as normal, but the steam from under the bonnet made me pullover and cut the engine. Rac bloke said it was a leaking plug and left me to it. Had to pay for the car to be towed to dealers and it turned out to be a pin-size hole in one of the coolant hoses! They fixed for free when I went ballistic at them!

I would suggest you may have a leak somewhere in the coolant pipes/radiator somewhere. The STOP light will have illuminated as the water level will have got low or even emptied. You need to fill the water system back up and bleed the air from the pipes etc. Once this is done......check for any leaks by leaving the car to tickover till you can spot anything.
If the water seems to be disappearing without sign of leaks.....it could be that the head gasket has gone or worse there is a crack internally.
