Hi Guys
I have recently bought an S reg GLX and have this annoying ticking/tapping noise. It comes after i have been driving it,stop and put it in neutral but keep the engine running and i can only hear it from inside the car,not when i open the bonnet. it sounds like its coming from behing the dashboard somewhere, its not a loud noise but is definitely there, its starting to annoy me now. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what it could be? should i take it to get looked at?
Thanks
Tom

The only thing I can think of is the tappits (think thats right)!
That would come from the dash as its in the engine bay , but right near the driver. The tappits move up and down when the car is ticking over/neutral etc.
You should hear these when you open your bonnet tho, unless the sound of the engine drowns that out!!

the noise isnt that loud so the engine probably would drain it out,it is definitely from the drivers side so i guess it is the tappits. Can this be rectified and would it cost a lot? Will it get worse if i leave it. I have read that you can get the tappits adjusted so they arent as noisy, has anyone heard of this??
Thanks again

Does it happen only when your driving, and in gear ??
If you dip the clutch and keep the engine reving the same, does it go away ??

Tappits are a common word for the cams on the camshaft, they tap the valves hence the name tappits. You may find that you are low on oil, as usually the head (where the cams are and where you fill the oil too) should be pretty much soaked in oil. When you start up the first job of the oil pump is to get the oil out of the sump and into the head to lubricate the camshafts.
I doubt very much your tapping problem is the tappits. If it is I suggest you sit down when you get a quote as it usually involves stripping the head down, which will mean you will need the head reground and it will take about a day solid to fix. It could be simple and be the timing, but I doubt that too.
It wouldn't be something tapping something else, I mean when the car is in neutral and idle it vibrates and shakes more than when the engine is working, the vibrations and shakes change, so it could be something like a plug come loose banging against the side of the fuse box or BSI which is in the drivers footwell.
Have you stuck you head in the footwell when the car is running at idle, see if you see anything, take a torch when you do something like a mini maglite.

I cant hear the noise when i'm driving unless i stop at traffic lights so i guess its always there but the engine drowns out the tapping noise.
Its not there when i first start the car up,only after i've driven it for any length of time. It tends to go if i depress the gas pedal slightly. seems odd that i can only hear it from inside the car and not outside or when i open the bonnet. and its definitely coming from behind the dash somewhere!
I've booked it in with peugeot next Thursday and they are going to have a look at it. I got 6 months warranty with it so hopefully whatever is wrong with it i will be able to get sorted using the warranty.

Tappets sit between the lobes of the cam and the valve. They aren't soaked with oil either. They are filled with oil. The oil pressure (from the oil pump) within the hydraulic tappet ensures the correct clearance between cam and tappet is always maintained. This should mean quieter running (compared to solid lifters) and are also maintainence free.

Could this be noise coming from injectors. I've learned that you can here them at idle as they are opening / closing but as engine speeds up they open /close faster and are no longer audible.

Hi Guys
Took her in to peugeot and they said it is the injectors working and is very common to hear them in the 206,its not doing the car any harm which is good to hear! They said that they could stop the tapping noise but it will cost hundreds of pounds so i think i'll just live with it!!
Thanks for all your help.

My ex 307 used to make this noise. I never bothered about it. It was worse when engine was cold.
