I recently purchased 1.4 206 with some niiiice extra bits. As these cars did not come with ABS as standard when new, I specifically asked the dealer, who told me the car has ABS. I have since spied a PUG handbook highlighting all ECUs in a 206, it looks like I don't have the ABS one. I know an emergency brake will tell me, but I'm just being a bit of a girly and want to find out if there is an easier way of finally confirming if car has ABS. Are there any sensors on the wheels I can look for ? I would be so happy with any ideas given before I re-visit the nice man at Pug !!! ;D

found this on www.parkers.co.uk"also optional ABS on most cars (standard on sportier 1.6 and 2.0 petrol models)"so you wont really know unless you know what to look for? i dont think i have ABS and i have the 1.6 XS so unless the car was bought with ABS as requested then chances you prob might not have ABS. KAT if you do find that your car does not have ABS but you bought the car as advised by the dealer that it did have ABS then you need to complain about that.

Open the bonnet and look behind the passenger side headlight. If you can see what looks like a metal cube with pipes coming out of it, then would I would say you have ABS. If there is gap between the passenger side headlight and the fuse box, then you don't
Hope this helps

or the fun way for us contryfolk... find a nice wet flat field: campsites are perfect, no need to go any faster than 10mph, slam on the brakes. If the brake pedal vibrates like a jackhammer youve got abs, if it doesn't... you don't

Both Hdi and Mitch have good suggestions.
If you really don't want a non-dangerous way the hdi has the best method. Its a silver cube behind the headlight with bent metal pipes coming out. You can see what we mean by going to the identify my car section and looking and the GTi engine. The ABS is located behind the passenger side headlight and in relation to the picture its the bottom right-hand side.
However Mitch has a more fun way, you can soon tell if you brake sharply on some wet grass.

mitch suggestion is fun but not when your travelling at 30mph and some crazy women decides to pull out of a left hand turning and i had to slam on the brake pretty sharpish (in a work car!) and luckily the ABS came in and i stopped inches away from her car, then she had the cheek to look at me as though i was in the wrong? ? i mean some people are just nutters on the road!

Nope. ABS works on all wheels only now, it now incorporates electronic brake distrubtion units which spread the load of the braking to the most gripped wheels to allow stronger braking and shorter stopping distances.
If you have drums you will not have ABS. Drums can't cope with the way ABS works.

Well what can I say, thank you all for your tips. I still haven't had the ....I'll say guts to do the emergency stop routine, but hey I do live in Manchester and the torrential rain has not helped especially as I have no ABS ! I originally checked on Parkers website thats why I specifically asked if ABS had been fitted as an extra. I definitely have no metal box behind the passenger light. And I do have drums at the back and discs on the front so I think I have been duped. I've been in touch with the dealer, ABS cannot be retro fitted, I now have go back and sort somethig out, have I been conned because I'm a blonde ? ! ? ! But hey at least my fellow 206 owners are friendly eh !!!
your ever grateful K

If you have the paperwork saying you requested ABS on the car, or it was advertised with ABS then you can rightfully refuse the car as its not as per description. You will need to get the services of a solicitor or the authorities on the case to get any result. Cause we are, we are especially friendly here.

if your 206 has abs, when you turn the ignition on the orange abs light should illuminate for about 6 seconds on the dash.
from memory on a 1.4 206 its either a orange light with a picture of a car skidding or the letters abs it's been a while since i drove a 1.4 206 with abs
